One Day Trip in Penang

Things to do in Penang

Penang is a colourful and multicultural state in Malaysia.  The city is known for its British colonial buildings, chinese shophouses and mosques. Beyond the old town, George Town is a modern city with skyscrapers and shopping malls. Beside its cultural buildings and heritage area which are one of the major tourist attractions, this beautiful island is known as the food paradise in Asia to many due to its diverse array of cuisines and flavours. Be prepared to indulge in Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Western food and everything in between, all serving up unique twists on the classics as well as more innovative fusion dishes.

My group of friends and I decided to tour around the island to discover the beauty of Penang. This blog will get you covered on the places that you can visit in Penang in a day!

1. Watch the amazing view of sunrise from the top of Penang Hill

(Penang Hill Official Page)

Penang Hill provides train service to the public daily to get to the top of the hill. The service starts as early as 6.30am to 11pm. Enjoy the beautiful greeneries on both sides while on your way up.

We reached the top at 7am and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking sunrise that oversees the whole of Penang.

Taking pictures with the beautiful view is a must! Apart from the fantastic view, immerse yourself with its attractions like owl museum, love lock and aviary garden.

2. Air Itam Market

In the morning, Air Itam Market is bustling with people buying supplies of ingredients, fresh fruits and spices. Besides that, the whole road is occupied with local food stalls. If you are looking for mouth watering local food, you will not be disappointed by the huge varieties offered.

Curry Mee

One of the most famous stalls visited by both locals and tourist all over the world is the Sisters' Curry Mee. The story of two Lim sisters, Mdm. Lim Kooi Heang and Mdm. Lim Kooi Lai, has been peddling their recipe forPenang style curry mee in the township for decades! The bowl of noodles are served with a fragrant coconut broth, beansprout, topped with sambal ,dried brown squid pieces, coagulated pig blood and soft pieces of bean curd puffs.

Location:  612 T, Jalan Air Itam, Pekan Ayer Itam, 11500 Ayer Itam, Pulau Pinang

Assam Laksa

Living up to Penang's esteemed street food cred, this stall situated next to Air Itam market is hugely popular for serving authentic assam laksa. Each bowl is filled with thick rice noodles, fresh vegetables, a spicy mackerel-based soup and a dollop of shrimp paste. The stall is just a five-minute walk from Kek Lok Si.

3. Kek Lok Si Temple

(TheSunDaily)

Kek Lok Si Temple. a stone's throw away from Penang Hill, is also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss. Kek Lok Si is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, and arguably one of the most famous in Penang. The best time to visit Kek Lok Si is during the Chinese New Year celebrations, when the temple is adorned with thousands of bright hanging lanterns. At other times, there is still much to see, with prayer halls, pagodas, bell towers and a tortoise pond topping the list.

Kek Lok Si is the cornerstone of the Malay-Chinese community, which provided the funding for its two-decade-long construction. Its key features are the seven-tier Ban Po Thar pagoda and an awesome 36.5m-high bronze statue of Kuan Yin, goddess of mercy.

Penang is famous for its heritage area for one of its major tourist attraction. The street itself is full of charming shophouses, artists galleries, cafe's and some of the best of Penang's street art can be found around this area.

There are many shops that allow you to rent bicycles at a very cheap rate. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the area!

5. Chew Jetty

(WanYing, 2018)

After exploring the heritage area, we walked over to Chew Jetty. We got the chance to see how people from the olden days live on wooden houses on silts. For visitors to Penang, this site is a fascinating and must not be missed out in the itinerary.

6. Aiyu Jelly

After a lot of walking and cycling around town, we stopped for this refreshing bowl of Aiyu Jelly which only costs RM2.20! One of the best ways to cool down and have something refreshing!😍
